In Malawi's 2024 football scene, significant highlights include the Airtel Top 8 Cup, where FCB Nyasa Big Bullets won the cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Silver Strikers. Ernest Petro's decisive header after a great pass from Alick Lungu in the second half, marking a high point for Bullets as they defended their title successfully at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Also, Silver Strikers have been performing impressively, maintaining their strong form as they secured a 2-0 victory over Chitipa United, with goals coming from Gift Chunga and Binwell Katinji. This victory put them at the top of the standings early in the season, showcasing their dominance.
Several top Clubs in the super League such as Silver Strikers, Mighty Wanderers and the Newly Promoted Creck SC, underwent important changes in their technical staff. These changes include appointment of new head coaches and assistance to improve performance in the 2024 season.
The Blantyre Derby between Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers was also noteworthy, showcasing intense competition and tactical maneuvers. Wanderers, strengthened by standout players like Blessings Singini, showed a much-improved defense this season, conceding just one goal in four matches. Meanwhile, Bullets relied on midfield stability from players like Yankho Singo and Ernest Petro, making them formidable in possession and attack.
In terms of the financial landscape, the Super League has also experienced significant developments. The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has valued the league at K1.3 billion, and as part of securing additional sponsorship, Premier Bet has entered into a partnership, contributing K260 million. This collaboration will see each of the 16 clubs receive K10 million, along with other awards for player and coach performances throughout the season.
Additionally, the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) in partnership with TNM, has introduced a 100% electronic ticketing for all matches starting from December 1, 2024. This is set to improve fan experience, reduce fraud and provide easier access to tickets via mobile payments.
